1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE
Our weekly noon vigils are on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, April 29, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the low to mid 70s under mostly sunny skies. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.
2. US ARMY SURRENDERS; FREES MARC HALL
GI rapper, Marc Hall, who was sent to the Middle East to be court-martialed has been freed. Read about it at (click here).
3. 18 VETERAN SUICIDES EACH DAY
Army Times reports that 18 veterans commit suicide every day, (click here). What is wrong? Could it be that our illegal unjust wars brutalize our own troops almost as much as the civilian population of the places we invade and occupy?
4. BEGINNING OF THE END OF AFGHAN WAR?
Mark Weisbrot predicts that after more than eight years of waging this increasingly unpopular war, it will soon come to end, (click here). I can vouch for the war's unpopularity. Even in conservative Rolla, comments on our vigils range better than 5 to 1 in favor of our message of ending the war. Just as in Vietnam, the critical element in ending the war is our disaffected troops and veterans themselves. Check out Veterans for Peace.
5. MILITARISM AND ENVIRONMENTALISM DON'T MIX
Nowhere is this more evident than in Israel where amid celebrations of Earthday the environmental destruction of Palestine continues, (click here). For the environmental ravages of our own military, read "The Green Zone: The Environmental Costs of Militarism" by Barry Sanders.
