1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE

Our weekly noon vigils are on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, May 20, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the 60s with an 80% chance of rain. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.

2. WHAT DOES AROUND, COMES AROUND

The best way on ensure that terrible things will happen to you and yours is to do nothing while they happen to others. Glenn Greenwald details how the focus of the "war on terror" has moved from those other people to ordinary US citizens, (click here). To quote Nazi victim Martin Niemoller:

When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.

Please join us this Thursday and speak out!

3. MORE ON NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY

Former editor of this newsletter, Carol Ann Smith, sends in the following article on the NNPT, (click here).

As far as I can see, the NNPT is dead for several reasons: First, because the nuclear powers, particularly the United States, have made it plain they have no intention of living up to their treaty obligations which include nuclear disarmament. Second, because it has become clear that nuclear power production is so entwined with nuclear weapon production, that the two are almost inseparable. Third, there are, at least, four non-signatory states with nuclear weapons that appear to have no intention of giving up their nuclear weapons. Fourth, some nuclear weapon states, particularly the US and Israel, have no qualms about threatening to use their nuclear weapons on states without nuclear weapons. And fifth, nuclear power generation has turned out to be unsafe, expensive and dirty.

And here's two articles about Iran's nuclear partnering with two other non-nuclear states, Turkey and Brazil, (click here, and here).
