1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE
Our weekly noon vigils are on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, July 1, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the high 70s under mostly sunny skies. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign. Special thanks to all who vigilled during the past 3 weeks.
2. FOURTH ANNUAL JULY 4TH PEACE IS PATRIOTIC VIGIL, 6:30 PM, MAIN ENTRANCE TO LIONS CLUB PARK
We will hold our fourth annual July 4th Peace is Patriotic vigil at the main entrance to Lions Club Park off Highway 63 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. We have had problems with the Lions over our July 4th vigils in the past; so please, vigil only on the sidewalk, and do not park on Lions Club property unless you have family members attending the carnival.
3. ARE WE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?
Often I am asked what good do our vigils do? David Korten gives us five ways to tell whether our actions are helping to create a better world. His article is well worth reading. For my own part, I have on many occasions been approached my family members of troops in Iraq or Afghanistan and thanked for the work we are doing. If for no other reason, this alone makes our vigils worthwhile. I am also mindful of being asked the same question about Vietnam 40 years ago. As was revealed later, our actions, particularly those of the soldiers and veterans who opposed the war, played a strong role in ending the war. So let's keep up the good work.
4. AFGHANISTAN IS THE PLACE WHERE EMPIRES (AND THEORIES OF WAR) GO TO DIE
Stanley McChrystal is gone and unlamented; but his Afghan policy lives on in his mentor, David Petraeus. According to Robert Dreyfuss, time is running out on the 9 year old Afghan war - an illegal war that should never have been started, and, like all wars, turns out in the end to be an expensive and mischievous folly, (click here).
