1. THURSDAY NOON VIGIL FOR PEACE
Our weekly noon vigils are on Thursdays. We vigil for peace in front of the Rolla Post Office THIS THURSDAY, December 24, (and all subsequent Thursdays until peace is established) from Noon to 1:00 PM. Please try to join us. The temperature is predicted to be in the low to mid 40s with rain and thunder. If you do not feel comfortable standing with us in front of the Post Office, please consider driving by and showing your support for our message by honking your horn and flashing a peace sign.
2. WORLD LEADERS BLOW HOT AIR IN COPENHAGEN
World leaders (almost all of them) blew it big time in Copenhagen, failing to reach any kind of agreement that would save the Earth from continued warming. Johann Hari in After the Catastrophe in Copenhagen, It's Up To Us, spells it out clearly: WORLD LEADERS HAVE FAILED. NOW IT'S UP TO US, THE PEOPLE. This should not be unexpected. Left to themselves, leaders invariably fail. This is why I have been quoting Howard Zinn for so many years: "To rely on the wisdom of the people in power is the worst thing you can do."
Hari gives us an excellent global warming analogy. If you don't read anything else, read this:
"If I go out for a picnic and the temperature rises or falls by 2C [3.6 degrees Fahrenheit], I don't much notice. But this is the wrong analogy. If your body temperature rises by 2C, you become feverish and feeble. If it doesn't go back down again, you die. The climate isn't like a picnic; it's more like your body."
3. HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Happy holidays to every one of you. I pray that 2010 will (unlike 2009) be a year of peace and justice.
